The Hole In Our Gospel By Richard Stearns

Wow. That was my reaction after reading The Hole in our Gospel by Richard Stearns. The story is a personal story of how Richard Stearns went from CEO of a fine china company to President of World Vision (begrudgingly) and how that radically changed his family, life, world and how it should change ours.

He takes a look at poverty and injustice and how we as Christians should be responding to a world that is hurting. And he takes a stand that if we are not addressing these needs then there is a “hole in our gospel.” He outlines that the WHOLE gospel includes providing not only for the spiritual but the physical needs of those around us.

As Americans when we think of poverty it often seems like a distant issue because it doesn’t affect our everyday life. We see pictures of malnourished children or natural disaster victims on TV and we can just change the channel and not think about it anymore. Stearns brings poverty “to life” by describing the plight of those impoverished in vivid first hand detail, explaining the daily difficulties they face and the generational consequences.

Then Stearns outlines ways that we can and should help. Sponsoring children, donating money to charities that provide health care, clean water, mosquito nets, etc., adopting orphans – really the opportunities to change the world are so numerous. I guarantee that you cannot read this book and not be affected. You will want to take action and you should!

I haven’t read the book, but I can see the needs of the people in our own country. I’m happy that Ridgedale was one of the first churchs’ to be a part establishing VIM here in town. (Volunteers in Medicine). Gives medical help to uninsured etc. A great ministry. So many chances in our own area to be helpfun and giving of our means….
